2014 Entertainment & Bands

 Edwin McCain Headliner

Edwin McCain’s voice is everywhere.  At any given moment, a radio station is playing one of his songs.  An American Idol hopeful is belting out “I’ll Be.”  A newlywed couple is dancing to “I Could Not Ask for More.”  His songs have over 25 million plays on myspace alone.  There’s Edwin singing the National Anthem before the Atlanta Braves and the Dodgers play for the pennant.  Before a NASCAR race at Talladega.  And at the NBA Finals.  We hear him in over 100 concert halls throughout the country every year, and that’s not even counting the performances at the Super Bowl Village and fundraisers for Habitat for Humanity, the Wildflower Camp Foundation, Kyle Petty’s Victory Junction Gang and so many more. McCain’s innate ability to write and perform songs that somehow every listener claims as their own has made him one of the most enduring and downright likable entertainers of our generation.

Over a million Dr. Phil viewers voted “I’ll Be” as the best wedding song ever written, VH1 calls it one of the “Greatest Love Songs of All Time”, it has received over 17 millions plays on myspace alone.  Even Justin Beiber posted his version on YouTube (he’ll still sing it during a concert now and again).  The New York Times dubs Edwin the “great American romantic,” and his fans do certainly agree but it’s the FUN that brings them back to his concerts every single time he comes through town.  Edwin roars through soulful renditions of his songs, tosses in irrepressible vintage R&B rhythms and turns his concerts into parties.  His between-song-banter is more stand-up than rock star, drawing as many laughs as cheers.

“It’s not about chart positions or record sales or anything like that,” insists the man with 11 albums, a wall of platinum and gold albums that have sold in the millions, and reams of Top 10, 20 and 40 hits, “it just has to do with people coming together and sharing a moment, that's it.  And that’s all I ever wanted to do. I just love that moment in the small club and bar where every single person in there has a moment where it’s silent and they get it and it’s beautiful, that moment where the music that’s coming off the stage is much more than the players and much more than the audience and something happens and you’re sitting there and your hair stands up. That’s it, man. I love it.”

Few artists share such a tight bond with their fans and can fill concert venues like McCain can.  And even fewer can win over new audiences the way Edwin does.  Witty and affable, engaging and entertaining, McCain’s stage presence has even brought him invitations to deliver motivational speeches at corporate events, peppered with musical breaks featuring his hit songs.  An entrepreneur who has launched major fundraising events as well as runs his own businesses and television productions, McCain imparts hard-earned wisdom about succeeding in business and life with humor, anecdotes from his triumphs - and failures - and his ability to embrace it all.

Blue Dogs

After 25 years of playing shows and releasing 9 CD's and 2 DVD's, South Carolina's Blue Dogs celebrated in grand style with a sold-out two-set performance at the Charleston Music Hall on Sunday, December 29, 2013, joined by special guests and friends paying tribute to the band, and in some cases, singing one of the Blue Dogs' songs back to the band. Darius Rucker sang "Isabelle" (along with his own "Wagon Wheel," and his old bandmates from Hootie and the Blowfish joined him onstage for two Hootie hits, "Time" and "Hold My Hand"). Edwin McCain sang the Dogs' "Rainbows Over My Blues" and part of "I'd Give Anything" (as well as his own "Gramercy Park Hotel"). Radney Foster performed with the band two songs that he co-wrote with Dogs lead singer Bobby Houck, "Half of My Mistakes" and "What's Wrong with Love Songs." There were also appearances by other South Carolina musicians including Cravin Melon's Doug Jones, Dangermuffin's Dan Lotti, Danielle Howle, Mac Leaphart and John Satterfield, and most of the former members of the Blue Dogs.

The band continues in 2014 to perform on pace to do more than 100 shows a year, from clubs, festivals, and colleges to corporate events, private parties, and fundraisers---primarily from New York to Florida but expanding wherever they are called. They continue to maintain a national (and international) fanbase, with all 9 recordings available through iTunes and other digital portals via their distributor, Redeye, and their CD's, DVD's and other merchandise offered exclusively at their website, www.bluedogs.com. 2013 marked 25 years since standup bassist Hank Futch joined forces with longtime friend, fellow cub scout, and acoustic guitarist/vocalist Bobby Houck under the band name “Blue Dogs.” And so the Charleston SC-based Blue Dogs quietly move into their 26th year as a band (est. 1987) playing and singing Americana/country-rock music.

The band has performed on the same stage with such well-known and diverse artists as Willie Nelson, Widespread Panic, Bruce Hornsby, and Hootie and the Blowfish and more. They have also received national exposure by singing the national anthem at the final Southern 500 NASCAR race in Darlington SC in 2004, and in 2007 performing as the house band on a week’s worth of Wheel of Fortune shows.

Something Positive Location: 2.2Mi

Something PositiveSpontaneous combustion is defined as ignition without cause. Something Positive started much the same way. Some may call it "fate," others "coincidence," but the guys of the band call it "grace.” Rhythm guitar player Michael Matthews had played drums all his life. Michael was a youth pastor and, in turn, taught drummer Justin Nipper. Then the two started jamming together with lead guitar player Stephen Fairchild. Two months later they met lead singer Roddy Merritt. Soon the band went from leading worship to playing concerts. The band desperately needed a fifth and final member to play bass. Travis White had expressed interest in playing bass, but had never played an instrument and was a professing atheist. Travis still decided to try it out, got a bass, and eventually accepted Christ into his life.

One month later, Something Positive took the stage in front of 1500 people and took their first big step into becoming an internationally known band. Five years later they have a new EP underway, produced by Third Day keyboardist Scotty Wilbanks, and are playing hundreds of shows, touring nationally, and opening for some of music’s most well known artists.

“We want to help shed light into a world that grows dark with negativity,” says lead singer Roddy Merritt. This is a message of hope, truth, and loving faith. Something Positive.

Spaceship Days Location: 1.6Mi

Spaceship DaysDurham pop/rock band Spaceship Days began in a North Carolina State University dorm room when three teenage swimmers (including bassist Chuck Cox and guitarist/keyboardist Greg Torsone) met and decided to start a band. Despite having no instruments, much less the skills to play any, the trio formed their first band, Grey.

In 2009, Chuck and Greg broke away to form the artistically matured Spaceship Days and released a pair of albums independently. The second, entitled Black Holes & Butterflies, earned them the "Best Pop Artist" in the 2011 St. Helier Cider Online Music Awards and “Best Pop Act” in the Los Angeles-based 2012 Artist in Music Awards. Adam Lee Decker took over vocal duties fresh from his return from becoming a Top 40 finalist on American Idol. The chemistry was immediately apparent and, after a successful string of West Coast shows, including an electrifying performance at the legendary Roxy Theater in Hollywood, the band returned to Torsones own Afterglow Studio to work on their third offering, The Thrill of Freefall.

Just as the EP completed, the band met seasoned scene veteran and multi-instrumentalist Dave Kress through a chance encounter on Twitter. Dynamic and passionate, he was happily welcomed into the fold to complete the band as drummer. Armed with an engaging blend of click, catchy pop/alt music, crisp production, and mature songwriting, Spaceship Days is a band for any music lover.

His real life wit and emotion come through in each line, supported by a velvety voice with incredible range. Spencer has taken the best of his musical influences (Elton John, The Police, and Pink Floyd, among others) and created a sound that is unique, yet utterly universal.

Spencer’s latest EP, Change of Scenery, was produced by The Ultras at Sherwood Ridge Studios in Pomona, NY with owner/engineer C Lanzbom. It includes an eclectic mix of three songs in varying styles, all co-written with The Ultras.
